Pilgrim Profiles

Below you can find the profiles of all the pilgrims who will be posting on this Blog during the pilgrimage

Kathleen  (GROUP LEADER)
Age: 24
Why did you choose the SVDP Pilgrimage: As a Vincentian I wanted to use this opportunity to not only increase my faith through WYD but to learn more about the history of the Society and Vincentian Spirituality.
What do you hope to get out of WYD: I am hoping that our pilgrimage will re-inspire me in my role with the Society and deepen my faith and spirituality, both Catholic and Vincentian. I am hoping that our group will return fired up to make a difference in their communities.
Something unusual/funny about you: I love to sing, although I am terrible at it!!

Alex
Age: 20
Why did you choose the SVDP Pilgrimage: I chose to attend the Vinnie’s pilgrimage to extend my knowledge and faith of the society, also to gain some life experience and travel abroad for the first time. Very grateful to the Townsville St Vincent de Paul society for providing me with such a great life changing experience.
What do you hope to get out of WYD: Overall great travelling experience and a wonderful life adventure that I can tell my grandchildren about one day, also to continue my WYD experience from WYDSYD 08 and become more involved with the society in the many wonderful programs they have to offer :)
Something unusual/funny about you: I’m Obsessed with Headbands: D

Virginia
Age: 20
Why did you choose the SVDP Pilgrimage: I did not attend WYD in Sydney, but heard so many wonderful stories from my brother Dominic’s experience and was keen to attend the celebrations in Madrid.  This was all wishful thinking as I had no idea how I was actually going to get there.  It wasn't until Sr. Mary, our parish nun, slipped me a Vinnies WYD application form after mass one weekend, and whispered in my ear to fill it in.  I completed the form with no real expectation of being selected.  So, when I received the phone call from The Vinnies WYD team I was absolutely over the moon!
What do you hope to get out of WYD: After being glued to the television and watching all the festivities unfold during WYD in Sydney, I am very excited to be part of the celebrations in Madrid.  I am thrilled to be able to share this experience with youth from around the world but especially the Vinnies WYD pilgrims.  I hope that throughout this journey I will learn more about St Vincent De Paul and his work as well as reaffirming my own faith beliefs.
Something unusual/funny about you:  I am a third dan black belt...so watch out! Haha

Tyrone
Age: 21
Why did you choose the SVDP Pilgrimage: Because Vinnies is Awesome! The Vinnies Pilgrimage will allow me to travel and experience new cultures and facets of my faith whilst being surrounded by high energy and supportive people. The friendships I’ve made and the experiences I’ve had so far have already made WYD the best thing I have done all year and it hasn’t even been yet!
What do you hope to get out of WYD: I hope to become closer to God and firmer in my faith through my interaction with other people.
Something unusual/funny about you: No matter what you might hear, whispered in dark corridors, late at night, in the flickering candle light, my jokes are awesome!

Faye
Age: 64
Why did you choose the SVDP Pilgrimage: I was asked to be a Baillie for young Vinnies people going to WYD. I am very honoured and humbled to be associated with such a fantastic group. I have agreed to be their Spiritual Advisor but from what I have seen so far I am the one who will be learning.
What do you hope to get out of WYD: I hope to increase my faith. I have already learned about a most beautiful young man Bl Pier Giorgio Frassati. We have adopted two saints as our patrons Bl Giorgio and St Francis Xavier. I hope that they will be with us during our journey and will help us see things that a tourist might possibly miss. As a Vincentian, I am looking forward to walking the same streets as Bl Frederik Ozanam and our other founders as well as Bl Rosalie Rendu. I am also looking making some lasting friendships.
Something unusual/funny about you: At 64 years of age (almost 65) I think it unusual that I am the Youth representative for the Northern Diocese of SVDP. One of the pilgrims in our group said to me during our Formation weekend “You’re funny!” I liked that no matter what she meant.

Dominic
Age: 19
Why did you choose the SVDP Pilgrimage: After attending WYD in Sydney I knew that these events were once-in-a-lifetime opportunities, and even though I so badly wanted to attend in Madrid, I always felt that it was wishful thinking. So when one of our parish nuns Sr. Mary gave me a Vinnies WYD application sheet from completely out of the blue, without really expecting much I thought I might as well give it a try. Being selected for the Vinnies WYD team was one of the biggest surprises of my life!
What do you hope to get out of WYD: I'm really excited to see all the varied ways that people practice their individual faith through our shared core beliefs. I hope that by experiencing this with our awesome Vinnies group and with the youth of the world, that I'll be able to reaffirm my own faith values, as well as learning to better myself in the service of others through the high morality of the St Vincent de Paul Society.
Something unusual/funny about you: I love gettin it down to the sounds of Beyonce and Gaga, whenever and wherever possible.

Chantell
Age: 26
Why did you choose the SVDP Pilgrimage: Currently I volunteer on two different programs with St Vincent De Paul - Night Riders and Buddies Day. I enjoy working with the staff and volunteers at St Vincent De Paul Society QLD, in improving these programs and seeing the benefits this has on our clients. I applied for the Vinnies pilgrimage, as I would like to share this amazing, life changing experience with other fun, socially conscious youth.
What do you hope to get out of WYD: I hope that WYD gives me a greater knowledge of the European culture and the history of St Vincent De Paul Society. As well as a chance to improve my Community Service skills which I can then apply when I continue my work with Vinnies in New York City.
Something unusual/funny about you: I never microwave leftovers. I always eat them cold.

Stephanie
Age: 23
Why did you choose the SVDP Pilgrimage: Actually, the Vinnies Pilgrimage chose me. I was very fortunate to be offered the place, when one member was unable to attend. The generosity of St Vincents is just incredible – I am so grateful to have been asked – and to have had the chance to come to understand the organisation and the vital role they play in modern Christianity.

What do you hope to get out of WYD: I hope to be able to better recognise Christ in the people around me... to become a better person and to hear the voice of God in my Heart and listen to him faithfully.

Something unusual/funny about you: I dance by myself all the time. I’m an obsessive reader and I am secretly an adrenaline junkie.

Tom
Age: 17
Why did you choose the SVDP Pilgrimage: I really wanted to go to world youth day and Vinnies was the first pilgrimage I found. Since I have not had much to do with St Vincent de Paul I thought it would be a great opportunity.
What do you hope to get out of WYD: I hope to get out of WYD plenty of new friends and to meet other young Catholics around the world. I hope to grow spiritually and share this amazing experience with others like me.
Something unusual/funny about you: I love the smell of the mail

Rebecca
Age: 21
Why did you choose the SVDP Pilgrimage: Because I belived that it would help me to learn more about the society and because I wanted to attend Famvin ( Vinnes international youth conference) as well as WYD.
What do you hope to get out of WYD: I hope to get a sense of spritual awareness, to learn more about my relationship  with God and with these experiences help  others through Vinnes.
Something unusual/funny about you: I love old books I love how they smell how they look and the stories they hold and I once shared a hair tie with a blue macaw

Why did you choose the SVDP Pilgrimage: I was offered the chance to go on the pilgrimage and when I researched the options I thought that this was the best choice for me in terms of spiritual growth.
